What is Audiology?
Audiology involves identifying, diagnosing, and managing hearing and balance disorders in people of all ages, from infants to older adults. It is a healthcare field dedicated to the hearing and balance system.
The aim of audiology services is to identify hearing and balance problems early, provide accurate diagnosis, and offer appropriate management and rehabilitation. Early detection and intervention help improve communication, learning, social participation, and overall quality of life.
What do Audiologists do?
Audiologists work with people of all ages, from babies to adults. They identify and treat many types of hearing and balance problems.
These include:
Hearing assessments—how well a person hears sounds. Audiologists conduct various tests for children and adults to determine the degree and type of hearing loss.
Diagnosis—identifying the specific nature of hearing loss or balance disorders. This helps in determining whether the issue is permanent, temporary, or requires medical referral.
Device management—recommending and fitting technology to help people hear better. This includes hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other assistive listening devices to improve communication.
Hearing rehabilitation—providing counseling and training to help individuals and their families adapt to hearing loss. This may involve teaching strategies to manage difficult listening environments.
Developmental support—helping children with hearing difficulties. Audiologists play a key role in supporting the speech and language development of children who may otherwise struggle due to hearing loss.
Prevention—educating people on how to protect their hearing. This includes providing guidance on using ear protection in loud environments to prevent future damage.
Balance and Dizziness—managing problems related to the inner ear that affect balance. Audiologists assess and provide management plans for people experiencing dizziness or vertigo.
Who can Audiologists work with?
Some children and adults that may benefit from audiology services may or may not have diagnoses that would include, but are not limited to:
Newborns, infants, and children with suspected hearing difficulties or those who failed their initial hearing screening.
Children with speech or language delays who may have underlying hearing issues affecting their ability to learn sounds and words.
Individuals who do not respond to sounds or frequently ask for repetition, which are common signs of hearing impairment.
People experiencing hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or dizziness/vertigo related to inner ear balance issues.
Adults and older adults who have difficulty hearing conversations in daily life, especially in noisy environments.
Individuals exposed to loud noise environments (in their work settings or hobbies) who require hearing protection and monitoring to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.
